What motivates you to give up smoking? It could be your own health; to save money; to stop harming others around you – or perhaps even the benefits it brings to your appearance.
Either way, we’re sure you can take some motivation from finding out the following information from the NHS…
- Smoking remains the leading cause of premature death, with almost 75,000 preventable deaths a year.
- Quitting smoking improves the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.
- The average smoker can save £1,875.60 a year by quitting smoking – based on July 2021 price.
- The skin of a non-smoker gets more nutrients, including oxygen. Stopping smoking can reverse the sallow, lined complexion smokers often have.
- If a smoker can make it to 28 days smoke-free, they’re five times more likely to quit for good.
- Men who quit smoking by the age of 30 add 10 years to their life. People who quit at 60 add 3 years to their life.
- Giving up tobacco stops teeth from becoming stained, and you’ll have fresher breath.
- Scientific studies show people’s stress levels are actually lower after they stop smoking.
- Breathing in secondhand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.
- In children, secondhand smoke doubles the risk of getting chest illnesses, including pneumonia, ear infections, wheezing and asthma.
- Children also have three times the risk of getting lung cancer in later life compared with children who live with non-smokers.
And if you’re a non-smoker, bear in mind that most smokers regret it. In fact, more than half of smokers want to quit, and 75% would never have started smoking if they could turn back time.
