E-Cigarettes Offer the Best Chance to Quit Smoking

New evidence from major clinical trials involved nearly 30,000 people.

If you are looking to kick the habit for good, regulated nicotine e-cigarettes offer your best chance of successfully quitting smoking, according to a major new review.

The global research charity Cochrane recently analysed 80 major clinical trials involving nearly 30,000 people. Their findings show that nicotine vapes are significantly more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches, gum, and support plans alone.

The Key Findings

The study revealed that using a nicotine vape increases smoking cessation success rates by about 60%.

To put that into perspective, traditional quitting methods see around six in every 100 people successfully stop smoking. When switching to regulated nicotine vapes, that figure rises to one in every 10 people successfully quitting.

The review also highlighted that:

  • Nicotine vapes outperformed non-nicotine vapes for initial quitting, though switching to non-nicotine options later can help you fully wean off nicotine.
  • Vapes may prove more effective than cytisine, the new anti-smoking pill currently being rolled out by the NHS.
  • There was no evidence of any increased risk of serious harm from using e-cigarettes to help quit smoking.

A Safer Alternative to Tobacco

While experts emphasise that vaping is not entirely risk-free and its long-term effects are still being studied, it remains far safer than smoking cigarettes.

Tobacco smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death worldwide, with around two in three long-term smokers dying from a tobacco-related illness. Choosing to quit dramatically and rapidly reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer.

Safety First: Stick to Regulated Devices

The positive findings of this review only apply to legal, regulated vapes that comply with strict UK safety standards.

Public health experts caution against using unregulated or illicit devices. Unlicensed e-cigarettes can be potentially dangerous, carry risks of unstable batteries, and may contain harmful or illegal chemicals. If you are using a vape to quit, always buy your devices and liquids from reputable, approved retailers.

Please note: E-cigarettes are strictly tools to help adults quit smoking. The NHS advises that children and non-smokers should never vape.
