Drink Less Alcohol

Tips for Moderation and Understanding the Risks

As Alcohol Awareness Week approaches this summer, it’s an important time to reflect on our drinking habits, particularly as this summer brings a season of sport kicking off with the World Cup and longer pub opening hours. We’re raising awareness once again about the risks associated with alcohol consumption and promoting healthier, more informed choices. But remember this advice and support is relevant all year round!

Understanding the Risks

1. Health Risks of Excessive Drinking: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to numerous health issues, including liver disease, heart problems, and an increased risk of cancer. It’s essential to understand that even moderate drinking can have long-term health effects if it becomes a regular habit.

2. The Dangers of Outdoor Parties and BBQs: Outdoor gatherings are a staple of the summer season, but they often come with the temptation to drink more than intended. The relaxed atmosphere, combined with the ease of access to alcohol, can lead to excessive consumption without realising it.

3. Weather and Drinking: Hot weather can exacerbate the effects of alcohol, leading to dehydration and increased intoxication levels. It’s crucial to stay hydrated with water and be mindful of the amount of alcohol consumed during hot days.

Tips for Moderation

1. Plan Ahead: Set a limit on how much you plan to drink before heading to a party or barbecue. Sticking to your plan can help prevent overindulgence.

2. Alternate Drinks: Alternate alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic ones, such as water or soft drinks, to help pace yourself and stay hydrated.

3. Eat Before and During Drinking: Eating a meal before drinking can slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream, reducing its effects. Continue to snack on healthy foods throughout the event.

4. Be Mindful of Peer Pressure: It’s easy to get caught up in the social aspect of drinking, but remember that it’s okay to say no. Surround yourself with friends who respect your choices.

5. Know Your Limits: Understanding your own tolerance is key. If you start feeling the effects of alcohol, switch to non-alcoholic drinks to avoid excessive intoxication.
