Five tips to take care of yourself this summer

As the weather gets warmer, the nights get longer and your desire to be outdoors is greater – it’s important to take the following precautions to keep yourself fit and healthy. 

Maintain a skincare routine


Skincare routines are important all year round but particularly in the summer when you’re prone to excessive oil and sweat which can lead to irritation, rashes, and exacerbation of acne.

We recommend washing your face in the morning and evening; as well as carrying some tissues or wipes to blot your skin throughout the day. It’s also very important to wear sunscreen or a moisturiser with SPF to protect your skin from the sun. 


Eat light, small, frequent meals


In the summer months, it’s best to save the heavy meals for the winter. Meals that contain large amounts of carbohydrates and fats can increase heat in the body – which is not desirable when the temperature is already rising outside. It’s best to consume more fresh fruits and vegetables that have high water content – such as oranges, watermelon and tomatoes.


Keep yourself hydrated 


Increased heat and sweat don’t only wreak havoc on your skin, but it can leave you feeling very dehydrated. This is why it’s best to reduce or avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and coffee – particularly when the days are much hotter. Be sure to drink around 2 – 3 litres of water – or flavoured water – throughout the day to stay hydrated.



Protect your eyes


Whilst sunglasses can serve a stylish purpose, they’re also essential for protecting your eyes against the sun’s harmful rays. Aim for sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB light rays. And of course, it’s never a good idea to look directly at the sun as doing so can cause permanent damage to your eye’s retina.



Time outdoor activity wisely

To avoid exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration, it’s best to avoid strenuous outdoor activities on warmer days. Aim to restrict your outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day -like early morning or late afternoon/evening.
