Have you recently received an invitation to attend a free NHS Health Check? Are you feeling reluctant to book your appointment?
That could be because you’re feeling well and don’t see the point. Or perhaps because you’re worried that the Check will bring unwelcome news. Maybe you think they’re a waste of time, because certain conditions run in your family and feel inevitable.
All of those are valid concerns! However, the more information you have about your health and wellbeing, the more you can do to help yourself stay healthier for longer. While you can’t change your age, family history, ethnicity or past choices, you can make a big impact on your health for the future, through choices you start making today.
Your NHS Health Check gives you the information to know which changes will make the biggest impact on your health and wellbeing.

What is the NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your general health. It screens for symptoms of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and kidney disease, as well as dementia, if you’re over 65.
You’ll be invited to have one every 5 years, if you’re between 40 and 74 and don’t have a pre-existing health condition. If you have a pre-existing condition, you should already be receiving regular check-ups.
Your NHS Health Check will be done by a healthcare professional. This will usually be a nurse, but it could also be a doctor, pharmacist or healthcare assistant.
The check takes about 20-30 minutes and includes measurements of:
- your height, weight and waist
- blood pressure
- cholesterol
- blood sugar level for some people
You’ll also be asked some health questions. These include family medical history, smoking and drinking habits, how much exercise and movement you do, as well as some personal details such as gender, age and ethnicity.
You’ll usually be given the results at the end of your Health Check appointment and will have an opportunity to ask questions. The healthcare professional will offer advice on lifestyle changes you can make to reduce any risks identified during the Check. You will also be signposted towards NHS services that can support you, such as the ones we offer at Essex Wellbeing Services.
“I feel fit and healthy – isn’t this a waste of time?”
A Health Check might seem unnecessary if you’re already feeling fit and healthy. But they can help detect risks early – before you notice any symptoms. Sometimes, just a small change now can keep you feeling great for years to come.
And if nothing shows up? That peace of mind can be reassuring.
“I’m worried about what the Health Check will find”
Not wanting to hear unwelcome health news is completely natural. But finding out about a health issue early can often mean better outcomes – and more options.
Many health conditions can be managed or even prevented with changes like quitting smoking, eating healthier, moving more, or drinking less. The NHS Health Check helps you spot risks early, so you can take action while it’s easier to make a difference.
“Health problems run in my family – there’s nothing I can do”
Family history might raise your risk, but it doesn’t mean you’re powerless. In fact, it’s even more important to go for your NHS Health Check if conditions like heart disease or diabetes run in your family.
During your check, you’ll receive a Risk Score. While you can’t change things like your age, ethnicity or family health history, many of the biggest risk factors can – like blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, and physical activity. You’ll get personal advice on how to manage them and links to services that can help.
